Church Wedding or Somewhere Else?

Depending on your faith or religion, you may wish to get married in your place of worship, and married by the priest or rabbi that has counseled you all the years you were growing up. After all, this is where you were baptized, had your first communion or barmitzvah.

On the other hand, you may be getting married to someone outside your faith and you have to be considerate of your future spouse's wishes; or you may have chosen a destination wedding so of course, unless you transfer the synagogue, it won't be in a church.

Add this to your list of wedding preparations, if you haven't yet: check the church availability. If you are getting married away from your parish, you will need to check who can officiate at your nuptials and if you can be married at your preferred place. Some religions have an absolute rule that you can only get married at their registry. Others may be quite open to marrying you in the middle of ocean or desert.

If you are marrying a person of a different faith, you may have to decide which of you will change religion and choose your venue accordingly based on your choice. The marriage ceremony may have some changes as well because of the beliefs of your chosen faith. For example, in certain faiths such as the Iglesia ni Cristo, instead of the seating being based on whether you are a friend of the bride or groom, the seating may strictly be all men on the left and all the women on the right.

Keep in mind that like everything else in your wedding, the choice of venue is about merging your lives and spreading the joy. Make your choice together as a couple and let your ceremony be a meaningful one.
